1910 Canadiana Manuscript Letter Touching on University of Toronto's Forestry Program
Ottawa Ontario Canada, 1910. Non-Book. On offer is a newsy letter with excellent Canadian content, written and signed by notable Canadian William Saunders [1836-1914], and written to one H. A. Kennedy. Dated April 24, 1910 on letterhead of Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa. The letter deals with Kennedy's recent visit to Saunders and talks about Kennedy's family, in particular Kennedy's son. Saunders is suggesting the son attend the Forestry Program at University of Toronto and Saunders has already talked to them. BIO NOTES: William Saunders was a Canadian pharmacist, scientist, civil servant, and author. Saunders emigrated to Upper Canada in 1848 settling in London. He apprenticed to a local druggist and opened his own pharmacy in 1855. In 1862, he helped found the Entomological Society of Canada. He was a founding member of the Canadian Pharmaceutical Society and served as its president. He also helped establish the Ontario College of Pharmacy. He served as president of the American Pharmaceutical Association, the Entomological Society (1875–1886) , and the Fruit Growers’ Association of Ontario (1882–1886). In 1876, he was made a director of the Huron and Erie Savings and Loan Society and served as its president from 1879 to 1887. In 1886, he was made the founding director of the Dominion Experimental Farms system. He retired in 1911. He was created a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1905. He was a charter-member of the Royal Society of Canada in 1882 and served as its president from 1906 to 1907. Wikipedia2pp. Autograph letter signed, small 8vo. Simple paper-over-boards format, tips rubbed, blue rear panel half-toned, black lettering to front cover and with blue and yellow ruling there. Features plentiful two-color illustrations. William Lawrence Saunders (November 1, 1856 - June 25, 1931) was a mining engineer by vocation, served in the Navy as the Chairman of the Naval Consulting Board during World War I and has a colorful biography, according to his Wikipedia entry. Born in Columbus, Georgia, raised in Apalachicola, Florida. He was a lifelong suffragist and donated much of his will to William & Mary College (Wikipedia). Scarce in the trade. The rubbed & scuffed covers are detached and the spine has perished and is thus lacking. Approximately 379 pages in all. The original title page to the first work is lacking. A manuscript title page for the overall volume, signed by Saunders, has been bound in. There is offsetting to the endpapers and pastedowns. A few pages are creased and there is some some soiling and scattered foxing throughout with some particularly heavy foxing to the pages of a few of the pamphlets. Staining and a hole to the last page with some loss to the first 4 lines of text on that page. The pagination of each pamphlet, listing corrections and manuscript annotations by Saunders, is contained in the list of the pamphlets which follows. The contents are as follows: 1. [Catalogue of the Trustees, Faculty and Students of the University of North Carolina. Raleigh, NC: Seaton Gales, 1851]. The title page for this catalog is lacking. Pages [3]-31, [1]. There is a hole in the last page of this pamphlet with some loss of text. A collection assembled by the chief organizer of the Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina William L. Saunders (1835-1891). The collection is signed by him on the front pastedown, titled in his hand and signed by him on an inserted leaf and occasionally annotated by him. Saunders graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1854. He was a colonel in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War and later was appointed Secretary of State. From 1869-1870 Saunders was the principal organizer of the Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina. Saunders Hall on the university campus was named to honor him. Over the last two decades pressure was put on the Board of Trustees by students and Saunders Hall was renamed "Carolina Hall" in 2015. The collection at hand is particularly associated with Saunders in view of his role as a historian and editor of the ten-volume "Colonial Records of North Carolina". Above the handwritten title is a light blue ownership stamp, "M. M. Marshall". Matthias Murray Marshall was a Confederate Army lieutenant and chaplain during the Civil War. After the war he became the historiographer of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. Fair .
